With the exception of the Makah and a few of their neighbors, they were the only Native Americans on the Pacific coast who hunted whales. Today, there are about 5,500 Kwakiutls living here on the tribes own reserve, which is land specially designated for Native American tribes. Houses, furniture, canoes, containers, masks. At the time of Columbus’ arrival in 1492, there were five Taíno chiefdoms in Hispaniola, each led by a principal cacique (chief), to whom tribute was paid. What did the Nootka tribe make Traditionally, the Nootka were master wood carvers. The so-called Nootka hats of woven fiber were common among other tribes of this area. What island did the Tainos live in Hispaniola The Classic Taíno lived in Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, while the Eastern Taíno lived in the northern islands of the Lesser Antilles. In 1991 there were some 4,000 Nootka in 15 bands in Canada. Instead, they lived in longhouses built of thick cedar planks. The Nootka call themselves Nuu-chah-nulth, which means all along the mountains. The groups on the southeast end of the island were the Nitinat, those on Cape Flattery the Makah. In the past some Nootka lived in the northwestern part of the U.S. Nuu-chah-nulth, also called Nootka, North American Indians who live on what are now the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, Can., and on Cape Flattery, the northwest tip of the state of Washington, U.S. The island is part of British Columbia, a province of Canada. What kind of houses did the Pacific Coast Indians live in The Northwest Pacific Coastal Indians did not live in tepees as did the Yakima Indians of Eastern Washington. The First Nations group known as the Nootka live on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Traditional Nootka culture was fundamentally that of the Northwest Coast area (see under Natives, North American) they fished for salmon, lived in long wooden houses, and created elaborate totem poles. How did the Nootka tribe build their houses They lived in cedar plank houses made of cedar.
